Site history
Brighton Gasworks covers two hectares of brownfield land in East Brighton, at the junction of Marina Way and Roedean Road. The site sits adjacent to East Brighton Park, with the South Downs to the north-east and the seafront to the south.
Brighton Gasworks started to produce and store gas in 1818, but this stopped in 1860 when the site began to be used instead for distributing and storing gas. At that time, there were seven gasholders on the site, but now there are only two unused gasholders along with some gas infrastructure, low-rise buildings and parking.
When gas began to be stored underground in 2012, the remaining gasholders became redundant and now only a small part of the site is needed for ongoing gas operations, leaving much of the land unused.
As a result, the former Gasworks has been allocated for mixed-use redevelopment in Brighton & Hove Council’s City Plan since 2016.
